This fiery group of paddlers is excited to join forces and set Lake Champlain ablaze as we paddle to support DHVT and the University of Vermont Health Network’s McClure Miller Respite House.

Our Sisters team is made up of Breast Cancer Survivors who have found that paddling a dragon boat has helped them recover, get back into tip-top condition and find support with a great group of women and men in the Dragonheart Vermont organization. We are a strong team, competing around the country and the world. We have a fun time, but we are tough to beat in a boat!!

Soul Sisters are breast cancer survivors who, like our Sisters, focus on enjoying life and improving our health and well-being through the sport of Dragon boating. Membership in Dragonheart Vermont translates to a commitment to our cancer survivorship mission and a dedication to community service. We are women who paddle for fitness, fun, and camaraderie. Whether we have been paddling for 15 years or 15 days, we paddle with the mission of doing our personal best. We are clearly a team with HEART.

East Coast Connections

This team is made up of breast cancer survivors from Florida, Kentucky, New York, Vermont and New Brunswick, Canada. who have come to join us on this very special day to honor breast cancer survivors all over the world. Empire Dragons-NYC

Founded in 2009 by Donna Wilson, James Lozada, and Jennifer Merendino, Empire Dragons NYC is New York City’s first and only breast cancer survivor team comprised of members from throughout the tri-state area. In addition, we are one of over 150 breast cancer survivor teams worldwide that serve to promote the sport of dragon boating as part of a healthy lifestyle and provide a unique support for those fighting cancer. 

Empire is dedicated to empowering women to survive and thrive beyond cancer. We work to improve the environment in which we all live, as well as promoting exercise and nutrition as a means toward a healthy and fulfilling life. We are proud supporters of Dragonheart Vermont and the McClure Miller Respite House.

Freedom and Unity

“Freedom and Unity” is a group of Town and City Clerks, our families, and friends from all over Vermont. Clerks take an oath to support the Constitution of the State of Vermont and of the United States. We are the record keepers at the heart of our communities, serving everyone equally, justly and respectfully. We come together under the leadership of Co-Captain Jessica Alexander, whose vision of “Freedom and Unity” came to her in a dream. Some of us on Freedom and Unity are cancer survivors,  and all of us are supporters. In the spirit of teamwork and community giving, we are honored to Ride the Dragon in support of breast cancer survivors, this year’s partner the McClure Miller Respite House, and so much more!

We are GoPink!DC, Washington’s only dragon boat team for women touched by breast cancer. Through participation, women experience the healing power of community and the physical benefits of an activity that can relieve the side effects of treatment. 

We race in festivals against other breast cancer teams, in a spirit of competition and camaraderie. The vibrant gatherings are transformational and teach survivors and supporters that breast cancer is an experience, not an identity. Tournaments support healing, growth and offer poignant opportunities for remembrance of sisters who have died. We are proud members of a worldwide community of breast cancer survivors who have discovered the physical, emotional and mental restorative benefits of the addictive sport of dragon boat paddling. We are also very proud to support Dragonheart Vermont and the McClure Miller Respite House.

The Visiting Nurse Association of Chittenden and Grand Isle Counties (VNA) opened the doors to the new McClure Miller Respite House in September, 2016. The ribbon cutting celebrated completion of the 21-room Respite House, which replaced the 13-room Vermont Respite House located in Williston. We are very honored to be supporting Dragonheart Vermont and its pledge partner UVM Health Network Home Health & Hospice.

Board members and friends of HOPE Works, Steps to End Domestic Violence and the Burlington and South Burlington Firefighters Associations join Dragonheart Vermont’s efforts to strengthen and empower breast cancer survivors and supporters in the shared spirit of teamwork and community giving. 

The Burlington and South Burlington Firefighters Associations represent the men and women of the Burlington and South Burlington Fire Departments who provide both fire and emergency medical services to our communities. Our members are passionate and committed to public service and work hard to ensure our respective communities are safe and healthy. 

HOPE Works is dedicated to ending all forms of sexual violence. We are committed to serving the Chittenden County community through the continued provision of our services and to being a leading voice in the State of Vermont for meaningful change in law and society. We provide crisis counseling and advocacy for those whose lives have been affected by sexual violence. Our education outreach work strives to change attitudes and beliefs that perpetuate and condone the cycle of violence. We constantly seek to expand our efforts to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse community and welcome all to our agency. 

Steps to End Domestic Violence addresses the needs of those affected by domestic violence in Chittenden County, Vermont. Our mission is to assist in the transition to a safe, independent life for all those who have been affected physically, sexually, emotionally, or economically by domestic abuse and to promote a culture that fosters justice, equity and safety.

Justice League Against Cancer or Justice League for short are the University of Vermont Internal Medicine residents and friends. These residents know a thing or two about taking care of individuals with cancer who need to be in the hospital. Between Cancer Avengers and Justice League, we pretty much have the whole hero world covered!

Make Waves for Wellness

Our crew is comprised of 21 UVM MC employees and family members from a wide range of professional and clinical care areas across the hospital and from our satellite sites across the state.  Together our team members are energized and interested in participating in the Dragonheart event this year to support our patients and families living with a cancer diagnosis. Many on the team have been touched themselves by a cancer diagnosis and have used integrative therapies to heal and live healthy lives. Everyone on the team is excited to participate and support the McClure Miller Respite House.

Paradise City Dragon Boat is a team of cancer survivors and supporters paddling on the beautiful Connecticut River in Northampton, Massachusetts. Our focus is on dragon boat racing, building and sustaining fitness, contributing to our community, and stewardship of the Connecticut River. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont’s Rhythm and Blues team will rock (but hopefully not roll!) through the waves to victory, paddling toward a healthier Vermont! Our goal is to make the competition sing the “blues” and help find a cure for breast cancer. Come race day, we’ll be paddlin’ with rhythm.

River Sisters

The River Sisters is a breast cancer survivor dragon boat team based at the Cooper River in Pennsauken, NJ. We are committed to fostering strength, wellness and camaraderie for women who have survived breast cancer. We practice in preparation for festivals throughout the east coast and abroad and we competed last year in Florence Italy at the International Breast Cancer Dragon Boat Festival. We gather to provide a community of encouragement, hope and friendship to those who have been touched by breast cancer. We welcome Dragonheart members who join our team for the 2019 Sisters at Heart Celebration and the Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival.

The dragon boat team Snap Destroyoars is made up of members from the community who attend our local gym, Snap Fitness Berlin. We are all dedicated, self-motivated, driven people who are so excited to be a part of this great cause! Many of us have never paddled before, but we are up for the challenge! See you all on the water!

Snap Dragonz   (Snap Fitness – Burlington)

Snap Fitness is a community gym dedicated to improving the lives of its members and the community. Our team is a collection of people at various fitness levels looking to engage in something new, fun, and challenging.  The Snap Dragonz is a group of fitness enthusiasts that range from goal setters, goal getters to trend setters. This is year three for us in the Dragon Boat Festival. Last year we made a splash with our wild tent site and offered chances to get swole in between heats. This year is a treat as we will race our fellow Snap Fitness gyms in the goal of raising the most money for cancer survivors. Instead of just training hard to win easy we are looking to fundraise like never before for a goal and cause that is close to so many of our hearts. We want to race to help end cancer and help all of our survivors. Look for red on race day and you’ll find us. Come by our Burlington location to get your fitness fix before, during, or after the race. We’ll see you at the finish line.

Soaring Ruckers

Back again for 2019, this compilation of friends, family, hockey and rugby connections, and the Soaring on team from 2017 will try again to take home a trophy!  Soaring On was created by the team captain after surviving ovarian cancer. From diagnosis to survivor Gabrielle appreciated the support of community and the resources needed for cancer survivors. Our team is completely funded by the fundraising done by each of the individual paddlers on our team. We look forward to seeing you on the water!

Springfield Dragon Ray’s

We are a group of dragon boat paddlers that has been a vital part of the Pioneer Valley Riverfront Club (PVRC) since 2013. The first established dragon boat team in Western Massachusetts, the Dragon Rays paddle two or more times a week on the Connecticut River and we spend the winter season working out together to build strength and endurance as a team. PVRC also is committed to raising awareness about breast cancer research.  We are proud to participate in the Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival supporting Dragonheart Vermont and the McClure Miller Respite House..

Stream Team UVM Medical Center Urology Department

This team is made up of the urology division at UVM fully supports integrative care.  We continue to do so, especially after one of our main urology nurses, Kathy, developed breast cancer and is currently undergoing therapy while  continuing to work and continuing to be part of our stream team! The support of integrative therapy has taken on a new meaning for us. We look forward to coming together to race for this cause. Thank you Dragonheart Vermont and the McClure Miller Respite House.

This is our 5th year and we are ready for another day of fun and friendly competition! We have some returning paddlers and some new faces! We represent the Inpatient Rehab Center at UVM Medical Center where we are dedicated to helping people return to everyday life. We proudly support Dragonheart Vermont and the McClure Miller Respite House.

Live Life Well, the newly adopted slogan of the Union Mutual Wellness Team, is more than words on paper – it’s a philosophy brought to life with numerous community and internal events our employees participate in throughout the year. Highlights of the past years included the Dragon Boat Festival, Strike Three Foundation Wiffle Ball Tournament, the American Cancer Society’s Pulling for Hope, and the fourth straight year as the lead sponsor of the Special Olympics Vermont Summer Games – which has grown to include over two dozen employees and family members taking part in the Penguin Plunge in early February. For 2019, we’re excited to continue our community and civic engagement, and we’re proud to work alongside the individuals that share our passion and dedication. See you on the water!

A group of randomly connected women. Spirited and High Energy, who have boundless imagination! We work hard to raise as much money as we can, each Dragonboat Season! As past champions of this auspicious event (2018), we are putting the pressure on ourselves to take this one again.  As a company we adhere to a work hard, play hard attitude and are hopeful that this initiative brings us across the finish line again.  VIP is a solution provider to the US beverage industry and dedicated to helping the community through athletic charity events like the Dragon Boat Festival.  Paddle On!

We have created a second team this year because we had so many employees, friends and family that wanted to participate.  Vermont Information Processing, VIP is the leading technology supplier for brewers, distributors, wineries, soda bottlers, and other companies in the beverage industry. We are a mere representation of the 400+ employee-owners of a great company and insatiably competitive athletes.  We are hockey players, basketball players, bikers, runners, skiers…   and now Dragonboat paddlers.  Our first entrance into this event this year, we are looking forward to staying “afloat in our boat”.  Long live the Dragonboat Fest! We are very proud to be supporting Dragonheart Vermont and the McClure Miller Respite House by racing at the Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival.

Wellness Warriors

Wellness Warriors is Massachusetts’ first dragon boat team for cancer survivors. We provide a paddling support group for men and women of all ages diagnosed with many different types of cancer. No matter where we are on the cancer journey, it is our rise to the physical challenges of dragon boat paddling, our love of this exciting sport and our deep care for each other that create magic in the boat. Our mission is to provide new opportunities for cancer survivors to heal – both physically and emotionally – by being active participants in their own recovery and part of a mutually empowering dragon boat team.
